Computer Stalls or Screen Freezes

Computer Stalls or Screen Freezes

What should I do when my computer stalls or screen freezes?

Please patiently try the following steps to return your computer or screen to a normal state.
  1. Simply wait 10 seconds (or longer) – your screen/computer may return to normal automatically.
  2. Close the apps that are frozen (if your mouse is working).
    • Find the app that you are using (icon normally listed beside other apps).
    • Right mouse click on the icon; choose ‘Close’ from menu.
  3. Restart or shut down your computer.
    • Hold down the power key for 5+ seconds to force shut down.
    • Reopen the apps that were stalling or frozen and note any changes.
  4. Update your computer and its applications.
  5. Scan for viruses using free software on your computer.
Advanced Steps
  1. Cool down your computer when it is overheating.
    • Turn off your computer, open a window/door or use a fan to cool down your computer.
    • Clean out excess dust inside the computer or ask a professional technician for assistance.
  2. Clear cache and temporary files on your internet browser – ex. Settings; clear history or browsing data.
  3. Check your storage (how much space is left on your computer) – remove unnecessary apps to free up space. (suggestion: keep 25% of space free in each drive)
